King to Obama:Keep Gitmo Prisoners out of NY

NY Republican Peter King who in the past has said that there are "too many Mosques here", continues to show us that he is one of the few politicians who understands the Islamic threat.

King: Keep terrorism detainees out of NY
As first reported recently in this space by Newsday courts reporter Anthony M. DeStefano, defendants in terrorism cases sent out of Guantanamo could be held instead in detention centers pending trial in NYC. Now potential Senate candidate and Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) says he opposes such a change. Here is an AP dispatch:

April 1, 2009 Associated Press WASHINGTON A New York congressman says Guantanamo prisoners shouldn't be put on trial in New York near the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Rep. Peter King, the senior Republican on the Homeland Security
Committee, said Wednesday that it would pose an unnecessary security
risk. He's opposed to President Barack Obama's plan to empty the
Guantanamo detention center within a year.

There's been speculation that some of the 240 detainees could be tried
in a federal courthouse blocks from ground zero.

A task force is trying to determine the best option for each Guantanamo
detainee. Because the review is ongoing, a Justice Department spokesman
says the department can't speculate on potential prosecution venues.

Other members of Congress also oppose housing the detainees on their
home turf.
