Advocate for military’s Jews speaking up for Islam in wake of Fort Hood killings

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Mikey Weinstein is probably best known for defending Jews from alleged bigotry and harassment in the U.S. military. In the past few days, however, he's been raising questions about whether there's an anti-Muslim bias in the service as well.

Weinstein, the founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, says Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's alleged killing of 13 soldiers at Fort Hood is inexcusable and reprehensible. But he also believes it is important to investigate reports of harassment that Hasan allegedly faced as a Muslim in the military -- mistreatment that Weinstein says could have contributed to his mental state.

“There's enough out there” to look into, Weinstein said. “I'm not excusing him, but did it affect him or was he just a maniac to begin with?”

Weinstein cited media reports quoting members of Hasan's family saying that someone had put a diaper in his car and told him, “That's your headdress,” and that a camel was drawn on his car with the words “Camel jockey, get out!”

Weinstein also provided a letter, with the name withheld, from a Muslim woman and wife of a member of the military in which she described how her best friend on the base, immediately after the shooting, told her that “Muslims shouldn't even be allowed in the U.S. Army” and that she repeatedly heard things like “Go back to your country” and “F-ing Muslims” as she shopped at the base commissary.

Weinstein, who spent 10 years in the Air Force as a military attorney, or JAG, said he also doesn't believe reports that Hasan's colleagues hesitated to report his changes in behavior because of political correctness. In fact, he claimed, Hasan's superiors would have been sympathetic to hearing such charges because of their strong Christian beliefs.

Weinstein's last statement completely goes against the facts that have come out. He does not seem to deal in the reality of our politically correct military "leaders".

According to past news accounts Islamic terrorist Hasan, stated that the "Infidels Should Have Their Throats cut", and "maybe the Muslims could stand up and fight against the aggressor". Amazingly neither of these statements were enough to have him discharged. The news this morning is even more disturbing, as our brave soldiers were forced to confide with Hasan and he was playing games with their minds. Stating that some of them should be charged with war crimes. Our so called military leaders should be ashamed of themselves, for allowing this to go on.

Fort Hood massacre suspect Nidal Malik Hasan sought to have some of his patients prosecuted for war crimes based on statements they made during psychiatric sessions with him, a captain who served on the base said Monday.

Other psychiatrists complained to superiors that Hasan's actions violated doctor-patient confidentiality, Capt. Shannon Meehan told The Dallas Morning News.

One day after the Nov. 5 attack that killed 13 and wounded 29, a Fort Hood official said she had never received complaints about Hasan's job performance. Col. Kimberly Kesling, deputy commander of clinical services at the base's Darnall Army Medical Center, also said he was a "hardworking, dedicated young man who gave great care to his patients."

Fort Hood officials did not respond to interview requests late Monday. They have declined in recent days to say anything about the major, citing the ongoing investigation.

Meehan said he learned of Hasan's prosecution requests from another base psychiatrist. That psychiatrist could not be reached for comment Monday.

The revelations add to a portrait of Hasan as a man at odds with many of those around him – emotionally, religiously and ideologically. He was, by various accounts, lonely, paranoid and increasingly zealous in his fundamentalist Islamic beliefs. He had been writing e-mails to a radical cleric in Yemen who called the U.S. war on terror a "war against Muslims" and advocated killing soldiers.

It wasn't clear Monday what information Hasan received from patients and what became of his requests for prosecution. ABC News, citing anonymous sources, reported that his superiors rejected the requests, and that investigators suspect this triggered the shootings.

Hasan may have been legally justified in reporting what patients disclosed, said Patrick McLain, a Dallas lawyer who specializes in military defense work and is not involved in the Hasan case. But it's impossible to be sure without knowing exactly what they said, he added.

"He was right on his authority to report it," said the ex-Marine, who formerly served as a court-martial judge. The Army teaches all service members that they have a duty to report evidence of war crimes.

Hasan's civilian lawyer in Central Texas, retired Col. John P. Galligan, did not respond to interview requests Monday. His client remains in a San Antonio military hospital, paralyzed from the waist down by police gunfire and facing premeditated murder charges.

Pain and guilt

Meehan, the Fort Hood captain, expressed skepticism with Hasan's requests that patients be prosecuted. "They're going in there confessing their pain and their guilt," he said, describing soldiers' postwar visits to therapists. "He's trying to turn it into a war crime."

MA: Muslims Pack Courtroon in Support of Alleged Islamic Terrorist

Just as Muslims turned in massive support for the Detroit Imam who was shot dead by the FBI, they have packed the courtroom in support of an American Muslim accused of wanting to open fire on mall shoppers. Supporters of Sudbury terror suspect pack courtroom

About a hundred supporters of a Sudbury terror suspect, including children wearing T-shirts that read “Justice for Tarek,” packed a federal courtroom this morning where his lawyer argued for the man’s release on house arrest.

Magistrate Judge Leo T. Sorokin took the matter under advisement and will issue a decision about whether Tarek Mehanna, 27, should be released on bail at a later date.

The hearing drew supporters from all over New England and ranged from close friends of the accused terror suspect to people who read about Mehanna’s plight on a Web site launched by his brother, Tamer, on freetarek.com

“I know him. He’s a very nice guy. He’s my best brother,” said Arben Xhemalallari, of Worcester, who brought his daughter, Madinah, 8, to court. The little girl is a student of Mehanna’s at the Worcester Islamic Center.

“I disagree with everything I’ve read about him,” said Xhemalallari, who took off from his job at Table Top Pies to go to court. “I will find time for him because that’s how much I love him.”

Mehanna and co-defendant Ahmad Abousmra, 28, are accused of plotting with an associate to attack shopping malls and assassinate two unidentified government officials. The associate cooperated with the government’s probe into Mehanna and Abousmra, who lives in Syria.

Mehanna and Abousmra, each face a 10-count indictment alleging they provided material support to terrorists, conspired to kill in a foreign country and lied to federal investigators.

Defense attorney J.W. Carney Jr., said federal investigators charged Mehanna after he repeatedly refused requests from the FBI to become an informant. He told Mehanna’s supporters he’d never seen such a showing outpouring for a client.

“They wanted him to become an informant but he wouldn’t,” said Carney.

Prosecutors have portrayed Mehanna, a trained pharmacist, as an extremist who reveled in the death of American soldiers overseas and once expressed that “Texas BBQ” was a better way to handle a rape allegation against an American soldier than the judicial system.

Columnist S. Chapman: US Soldiers Might Have Driven Hasan to Terrorism

Columnist Steve Chapman who bills himself as "solving the world's problems one post as at time", has written this truly ignorant article about the Islamic attack on Fort Hood.

Conservatives have been quick to trumpet the fact that the alleged killer at Fort Hood, Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, is a Muslim--the implication being that Muslims are inherently untrustworthy, hostile to America, at odds with civilized norms of behavior or something. But if that were the case, incidents like this would be common, not rare. It would be absurd and dangerous to anathematize all American Muslims on the basis of one alleged murderer.

Has Steve been in a coma for the last few months? Obviously he missed all of the arrests of American Muslims and terror plots that have been broken up. This is besides that hate that is being preached against America. Here is a recent recap.

We have the Islamos of NY based RevolutionMuslim.com preaching their hatred on the streets every week. The shootout with the now dead Detroit Imam who had a crew of Sharia loving Muslims, a US Muslim stating that homosexuals should be killed under Sharia Law, Boston Muslims that were plotting to open fire on random mall shoppers,, and there was also three other Islamic terror plots uncovered in one day here in America.

Are these actions not hostile to America Steve? Try and pay attention.
On top of his ignorance, Steve has the nerve to imply that the non-Muslim soldiers might have driven Hasan to turn into an Islamic terrorist.

It may be that Hasan subscribed to a jihadist ideology that drove him to kill his fellow soldiers. But it could be that Islam is just a distraction from more fundamental problems, such as insanity or just plain viciousness. Hasan reportedly complained of being harassed by his colleagues about his religion. Maybe he didn't think Islam was hostile to America; maybe they convinced him that America is hostile to Islam.

The Islamic victim card is pretty pathetic and part of the reason that the problems that stem from Islam are now in our backyard.


In his closing paragraph Steve goes into the full defense mode for Islam.

In any movement, religious or political, there are a few dangerous people. As a rule, all that proves about the movement in question is that it is composed of human beings. If it turns out Hasan is guilty, Islam is not the problem with him any more than Jodie Foster was the problem with John Hinckley.

Please point out any other religious or political movement that is causing problems across the world, like Islam is. You cannot Mr. Chapman.

His last sentence is some statement. So all of those Islamic warning signs, that have come to light have nothing to do with Islam? Obviously Steve finds life more comforting in fantasy land. Because what has has written in not the reality. People like Steve will never solve this problem, as he is part of it.

Obama salutes Fort Hood victims, condemns murders

FORT HOOD, Texas – One by one, President Barack Obama spoke the names and told the stories Tuesday of the 13 people slain in the Fort Hood shooting rampage, honoring their memories as he denounced the "twisted logic" that led to their deaths.

"No faith justifies these murderous and craven acts; no just and loving God looks upon them with favor," Obama told the crowd on a steamy Texas afternoon. "And for what he has done, we know that the killer will be met with justice — in this world and the next."

He did not name Maj. Nidal Hasan, the military psychiatrist accused of the killings. As for the victims and the soldiers who rushed to help them, Obama said, "We need not look to the past for greatness, because it is before our very eyes." He spoke at a memorial service before a crowd estimated at 15,000 on this enormous Army post.

The Army’s top officer, General George Casey wouldn’t rule out the possibility that the mass killing at Ft. Hood was an act of terrorism. I asked General Casey about warning signs that could have been acted upon and if this was a premeditated act of terrorism or if this is a case of someone who just snapped. Casey said, “I think we need to be very careful here on speculations based on anecdotes like that.”

“We all want to know what happened and what motivated the suspect, but I think we need to be very, very careful here in these early days and let the investigation take its course,” Casey told me on ‘This Week.’

General Casey told me on This Week that he’s worried that diversity could become another victim of Thursday’s mass killing at Ft. Hood. The incident was not the first case of fratricide by a Muslim and when I asked how the military plans to deal with this potential problem in its ranks, Casey said, “Speculation could potentially heighten backlash against some of our Muslim soldiers and what happened at Fort Hood was a tragedy, but I believe it would be an even greater tragedy if our diversity becomes a casualty here. It’s not just about Muslims, we have a very diverse army, we have very diverse society and that gives us all strength. But again we need to be very careful about that.”

17-year-old charged with threatening terrorism

A former MSU freshman no longer is enrolled in the university and is in jail on a $150,000 bond following his Tuesday arrest for making a terrorist threat or false report of terrorism.

Zachariah M. Aslam, a 17-year-old from South Rockwood, Mich., was arrested after police were informed he was making threats, according to a statement from the MSU Police.

Aslam was an enrolled student before the arrest, MSU spokesman Terry Denbow said, declining to comment further. The FBI was involved in investigating, FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said. Aslam was arraigned Friday in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court before Judge Richard Ball.

Berchtold referred all questions regarding the case to the MSU police. MSU police Sgt. Shaun Mills said police could not comment on the case.

Aslam’s neighbors and acquaintances said they were shocked by the arrest. History sophomore Chris Rivard, Aslam’s former roommate, said he had a hard time believing the charges could be true.

Aslam was a “very nice guy” who brought home extra snacks from an event with the crew team he was on, Rivard said.

“Just from living with him for a couple of months, it doesn’t seem like he had a violent bone in his body,” he said.

Rivard said he did not see anything in Aslam to make him anticipate the arrest.

“He was known for making some outlandish comments, but it’s definitely Zach. … And you’d go, ‘Well, that’s just Zach,’” he said.

Aslam’s profile on Facebook listed his academic programs as computer engineering, physics and math. It included many updates, some of including references to chemicals and weapons.

Fisheries and wildlife senior Zach Darter, who lives on Aslam’s former floor, said Aslam was friendly but a loner and many floormates did not know him.

“You never heard anything about him,” Darter said.

Aslam currently is being held in the Ingham County Jail, although that could change, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said. Dunnings said he expects Aslam’s pretrial exam to take place sometime in December.

A 36-year-old Richfield man charged with making terroristic threats during an argument with another man in Wright County has been arrested at O'Hare Airport after skipping out before his trial was to begin this month, authorities in Minnesota said today.

Ismail Alqawasmi remains in custody after his arrest at 8 p.m. Thursday, the Wright County Sheriff's Office said.

According to the Sheriff's Office:

Alqawasmi and another man argued at a residence on Jan. 18, 2008, and Alqawasmi made some threats.

His jury trial was scheduled for Oct. 5, but he failed to show up. A warrant was issued for his arrest three days later.

The Chicago-Sun Times reported that Alqawasmi flew into the United States from Amman, Jordan, on Royal Jordanian airlines and a customs official conducting a name check found the warrant on a law enforcement data base, according to police.

Alqawasmi was searched and had a Jordanian passport that was being held by U.S. Customs, police told the newspaper.

Alqawasmi is expected to appear before a Cook County judge today and could soon be headed back to Wright County, the Sheriff's Office said.

WORCESTER — Boston television crews were preparing to broadcast live last evening from Alhuda Academy on the latest news concerning a teacher charged in a terrorist plot when a young man slowed his sport utility vehicle and rolled down the window.

“Is this the place where they train terrorists to kill Americans?” he asked the cameramen before pulling away.

Similar scenes were repeated outside the East Mountain Street school during the course of the day after word spread of the arrest of Tarek Mehanna, who is accused by federal authorities of plotting to kill soldiers, mall shoppers, and politicians.

The arrest has prompted fear of possible retaliation among area Muslims.

“There's no question that there is a climate of fear building in our community as a result of this arrest,” said Tahir Ali, a longtime spokesman for local Muslims. “There are some who are worried that all Muslims will be viewed as terrorists.”

The 27-year-old Mr. Mehanna, who taught science and religion to middle-schoolers at the academy, was arrested Wednesday at his parents' Sudbury home.

According to court documents and federal officials, Mr. Mehanna was allegedly part of a conspiracy between 2001 and 2008 that intended to kill, kidnap, maim, or injure soldiers and two unidentified politicians who were members of the executive branch but are no longer in office.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston said the men also planned attacks at malls because U.S. civilians pay taxes to support the government and are “nonbelievers.”

Mr. Mehanna's friends and family, including his father, Ahmed Mehanna, a professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, were shocked to see him depicted as a would-be terrorist

“No, definitely not,” said the elder Mr. Mehanna, when he was asked whether he believed the charges against his son.

News trucks started to line the front of the academy early in the day yesterday and school officials quickly blocked off the parking lot with orange cones. Workers from two security companies were observed checking doors and the alarm system.

Worcester police were called by the school to disperse the gathering media. A police officer dispatched to the school told reporters not to trespass on school property and not to block the driveways.

Imam Abdul Karim, the spiritual leader of the local mosque, appeared from behind closed doors around 2:30 p.m. to deliver a statement. He declined to answer questions and asked reporters to leave because he said the cameras were making students nervous.

“Violence and aggression in any way, shape or form is absolutely against the teachings of Islam that we uphold,” said the statement. “Muslims in (the) greater Worcester area have been peaceful and law abiding citizens for more than 50 years. We stand by the judicial system. We are confident that the truth of these matters will surface in due course, and that justice will be served.”

It is unclear when Mr. Mehanna last taught at Alhuda.

Local Muslims said they believed Mr. Mehanna was a member of the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland.

Third man sentenced to 8 years, 4 months in Toledo terrorism case

A third Toledo-area man, Wassim Mazloum, was sentenced to eight years, four months in prison Wednesday night in U.S. District Court for his involvement in a plot to kill U.S. troops overseas.

Mazloum also was ordered deported after serving his prison term.

Earlier in the day, Marwan El-Hindi was sentenced to 12 years in prison, after the morning's 20-year sentencing of Mohammad Amawi.

All could have faced life in prison.

El-Hindi also was sentenced to an additional 1½ years in prison on an unrelated theft and fraud conviction in which he and another man conspired to take $40,000 from the government. His sentence carries a $20,000 fine.

In addition to their prison time, Judge James Carr ordered both Amawi and El-Hindi to undergo supervised release for the rest of their lives. El-Hindi and Amawi were both convicted June 13, 2008, of the same charges of two counts each of conspiring to kill or injure people in the Middle East — including U.S. troops serving in Iraq —and of providing material support and resources to terrorists overseas.

They also were found guilty on two counts of distributing information regarding explosives.

Feds: Sudbury man planned terrorist attacks at shopping malls

A 27-year-old man from Sudbury has been arrested on charges he planned terrorism attacks inside and outside the United States, including a plot to use automatic weapons to open fire at shoppers and emergency responders in shopping mall attacks, federal prosecutors said today.

Tarek Mehannah, of 6 Fairhaven Circle, is accused of conspiring with Ahmab Abousamra and others to obtain the automatic weapons needed to carry out a mall ambush in which they planned to open fire at random, said Acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks.

The plot included plans to fire at emergency responders, but was abandoned because the men could not obtain the weapons.

Prosecutors also allege the men discussed participating in violent Jihad against American interests and their desire to die on the “battlefield.” The crimes are alleged to have taken place between 2001 and 2008.

Loucks and Warren T. Bamford, special-agent-in-charge of the Boston FBI field office, have called a 10 a.m. press conference to discuss the arrest.

DC Security Scare Becomes Federal Case
Documents: Man threatened to blow up NW DC Metro

Police say the man's name is Ahamed Ali, based on a driver license from Bangladesh. Witnesses and police say Ali had been hanging around Chevy Chase Pavilion for a couple of days, taking notes, making threats, and acting strangely.

Now, according to a police report obtained by FOX 5, more is known about what had concerned passersby and police.

Investigators say Ali was overheard calling out: "I'm not scared to die! I will kill you! I will blow people up and the Metro!"

"He made some statements, threatening individuals," said Sgt. Guy Poirier of the Joint Terrorist Task Force. "At that point we had to take him at his word, what he meant."

DECATUR, Ill. — The day before he was arrested Thursday on charges of plotting to blow up the federal building in Springfield, Michael C. Finton was working as a fry cook at Seals Fish & Chicken in this old factory town deep in the Illinois cornfields.

Tall and red-haired, Mr. Finton, 29, was known among co-workers as cheerful and polite, but unwavering when it came to religion and politics. He was especially critical of what he regarded as permissive society.

“He didn’t like America very much,” said Mariam Fadel, 18, who works the counter at Seals. “He didn’t think it was strict enough. He thought we needed more rules, so that people would behave.”

She recalled him talking about a troubled childhood that included running away from foster care. He also spoke of hopes to leave the United States someday, she said, and settle in Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Finton went by the nickname Talib Islam (student of Islam). The authorities say he had converted to the Islamic faith while in an Illinois prison from 2001 to 2006, serving a sentence for aggravated robbery and aggravated battery. Acquaintances say he had been living in Decatur, about 40 miles east of Springfield, for perhaps three years.

On a MySpace entry, Mr. Finton listed his hometown as Visalia, Calif., in the Central Valley, and claimed he attended high school in Warren, Mich. In the entry, he wrote of self-loathing before he found Islam. “Everybody liked me, yet I hated myself,” he wrote. “People thought I was smart, and reasonably good-looking, but to me, I was a moron, and a freak.”

In a superseding indictment, North Carolina residents Daniel Patrick Boyd and Hysen Sherifi were charged with conspiring to murder U.S. military personnel. According to court filings, "Boyd undertook reconnaissance of the Marine Corps Base located in Quantico, Va., and obtained maps of the base in order to plan an attack on Quantico...Boyd possessed armor piercing ammunition...

Texas Man Charged After Leaving Inert Car Bomb Near Office Tower

Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, a 19 year old Jordanian citizen who was in the U.S. illegally, was arrested and charged after he placed an inert/inactive car bomb near Fountain Place, a 60-story glass office tower in downtown Dallas. According to DOJ, “Smadi was discovered by the FBI espousing his desire to commit significant acts of violence. Smadi stood out because of his vehement intention to actually conduct terror attacks in the U.S....

The problem is clearly getting worse and worse here, so where is the Muslims outrage?
Oh, I forgot, they are too busy getting ready for their giant prayer gathering in Washington today. Which is nothing more than a show of unity and a huge political statement. Like I have been saying, American Muslims are no different from the rest. It is time to end all Muslim immigration and Mosque construction. We have enough of our own problems already, we do not need Islam adding more.

Thailand:Car Bomb Wounds 42

Almost everywhere that we look, from Thailand to Russia, to Iraq, we continue to see violence in the name of Islam. Violence that will not end, as the war with Islam is forever.

Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.” Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, “O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?” He replied, “Whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’, faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have.”

Car bomb wounds 42 in Thai south: army

NARATHIWAT, Thailand — A powerful car bomb ripped through a restaurant packed with government officials in Thailand's troubled Muslim-majority south Tuesday, wounding at least 42 people, the army said.

The blast was one of the most serious for months in the kingdom's insurgency-plagued provinces bordering Malaysia where a bloody separatist rebellion has been raging for more than five years.

The 50-kilogramme (110-pound) device was hidden inside a stolen Toyota pick-up truck and exploded during the busy lunch hour in the centre of Narathiwat, the main town in the province of the same name, officials said.

"It's very horrible. We had intelligence that militants would mount a large-scale attack," Lieutenant General Pichet Wisaichorn, the southern region army commander, told reporters.

He said that seven of the 42 people injured in the blast were in a critical condition. Most of the wounded were Buddhist government officials, who are often targeted by the Islamist militants in the region.

Police and rescue workers were rushing the wounded to hospital and the local government chief was among those injured, a policeman said on condition of anonymity.

The timing of the attack just after the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan was "very interesting", said Sunai Phasuk, an analyst for Human Rights Watch in Thailand.

"We are in the holy month of Ramadan and the bomb went off clearly to harm the non-Muslim population," he told AFP.

"It shows the insurgents are avoiding causing collateral damage to their fellow Muslims, because they would come after the end of fasting."

He said this Ramadan was "marked with violence from day one". Over the weekend, eight people, including two soldiers and three security volunteers, were killed by suspected insurgents.

"It seems they use Ramadan to symbolise the cleansing of non-Malay Muslims," Sunai added.

Grenade attack in Cairo bazaar kills 1, injures 17

CAIRO – An attacker threw a grenade into a famed bazaar in medieval Cairo, killing a Frenchwoman and wounding at least 17 people — most of them foreign tourists, officials said.

The blast hit the bustling main plaza at the Khan el-Khalili, a 650-year-old bazaar packed with tourists buying souvenirs, jewelry and handicrafts. It was last attacked in April 2005, when a suicide bomber killed two French citizens and an American.

Sunday's blast outside a cafe sent a panicked rush of worshippers from the nearby Hussein mosque. Security officials said the attacker escaped, and within an hour, police found a second grenade and detonated it safely.

"I was praying and there was a big boom and people started panicking and rushing out of the mosque, then police came and sealed the main door, evacuating us out of the back," said Mohammed Abdel Azim, 56, who was inside the historic mosque. Outside, blood stained the marble paving stones.

A frantic woman screamed at police sealing off the area to let her look for her daughter.

A medic at the scene said the Frenchwoman died in the intensive care unit of the nearby Hussein hospital.

The wounded included three Saudis, 10 French, a German and three Egyptians, said Health Minister Hatem al-Gibali. He told the state news agency that the wounds were largely superficial, though one French victim needed surgery.

He said most would be released from the hospital by Monday.

The outdoor cafes and restaurants lining the square were packed with crowds, including a large group of Irish tourists at Mohammed Said's Al-Sinousi Cafe.

"There was a big loud boom. Everybody ducked," the cafe owner said. "I ran out to figure out what's happening."

The blast sent crowds scrambling in all directions, he said.

A police colonel said the small explosion outside the cafe kicked up stone and marble fragments, which wounded the passersby. All the officials describing the blasts spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

Egypt fought a long war with Islamist militants in the 1990s, which culminated in a massacre of more than 50 tourists in Luxor in 1997. The rebels were largely defeated and there have been few attacks since in the Nile valley.

There were, however, a number of attacks in recent years against resorts in the Sinai Peninsula, including one in Sharm el-Sheik in 2005 that killed more than 60 people.

Tourism is one Egypt's major sources of foreign income.

One of the highest religious officials in the country, Sheik of Al-Azhar Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi condemned the attack calling it "cowardly and criminal."

"Those who carried out this criminal act are traitors to their religion and country and are distorting the image of Islam which rejects terrorism by prohibts the killing of innocents," he said.

Montasser el-Zayat, a lawyer who has represented Islamic extremists in the past, told the Arabic news channel al-Jazeera that the attack maybe linked to popular anger of the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip last month.

"The nature of the explosion looks like an act carried out by young, inexperienced and amateurs whose emotions were inflamed by the events of Gaza," said el-Zayat, who once had links with extremists groups himself.
