Religious Accommodation


WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A prominent national Muslim
civil rights and advocacy organization announced today that a major medical
group in Texas has apologized to a Muslim job applicant and has agreed to
"clarify" its policy on religious accommodation for employees who wear
religious attire such as Islamic head scarves (hijab) or beards.

Last week, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)
reported that a Muslim doctor being interviewed for a position with CareNow, a
medical group with 22 facilities in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, was told that
a "no hat" policy would prohibit her from wearing hijab. She was also
reportedly informed that CareNow prohibits employees from wearing beards.
(Many Muslim men view wearing a beard as a religious requirement.)

A CAIR letter to CareNow noted that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
requires employers to reasonably accommodate the religious practices of an
employee, unless to do so would create an "undue hardship" on the employer.


In an October 31 e-mail, CareNow President Tim Miller wrote:

"We regret the misunderstanding with Dr. Zaki. We will clarify our policy and
continue to provide training to our current employees to try to prevent future
misunderstandings. We look forward to sitting down with Dr. Zaki and
discussing potential job opportunities. Bright, young doctors like her are
just what we're looking for."

"We are pleased that all current and future CareNow employees will have their
legal right to religious accommodation acknowledged and respected," said CAIR
National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He said CAIR's South Carolina chapter recently assisted a Muslim worker who
alleges that he suffered religious discrimination at the hands of co-workers
after he requested a private place at work to perform his prayers.

Tonight's CAIR Banquet Sold Out~Let the Hate Fest Begin!

Not only does the pro-Sharia Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), continue to whine about the four GOP members that have targeted them, they also have a sold out house for tonight's hate fest.


Here is what one of tonight's speakers had stated in the past.

CAIR Banquet Sold Out, Congressional Coalition Blasts Anti-Muslim Reps

CAIR Seeks Hate Crime Probe of Vandalism at Calif. Muslim Candidate's Home

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for vandalism of the home of a Muslim woman who is running for elected office.

CAIR said the house of Nadja Adolf, a Newark resident running for a seat on her local city council, was egged on Sunday, October 11. Adolf is a long-time Newark resident and has never had any previous complaints about property vandalism. A picture of her, wearing an Islamic head scarf, or hijab, was published in a local newspaper just days before the incident.

"Because of the circumstances surrounding this incident, we believe it is important that a possible bias motive be investigated," said Zahra Billoo, programs and outreach director for CAIR-SFBA. "Our community's religious, political and community leaders need to be vigilant of and address the growing anti-Muslim rhetoric in our society that can lead to such incidents."

Billoo also urged American Muslim individuals and institutions to review advice on security procedures contained in its "Muslim Community Safety Kit."

4 Republicans Target CAIR, CAIR SCREAMS Racism!

Finally some members of our government have gone after the terrorist supporting Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). In return CAIR has done what no one does better than Muslims, they have played the race card.

Islam group ridicules Muslim 'spies' claim

Four Republican lawmakers have accused the most prominent Islamic advocacy group in Washington of trying to plant "spies" as interns on Capitol Hill.

The claim was quickly denounced as "racist" and "insidious" by the Council on American Islamic Relations, and the effort appears to have little support from GOP leaders.

I am still waiting for someone to tell me what race Islam is.

In an unusual announcement this morning, four conservative Republicans — Reps. John Shadegg (Ariz.), Paul Broun (Ga.), Trent Franks (Ariz.) and Sue Myrick (N.C.) — formally asked the House Sergeant at Arms to launch an investigation of the Center for American-Islamic Relations. They accused CAIR, a non profit group, of trying to infiltrate Capitol Hill with interns and staffers.

And the response from CAIR?

"We would love to help people find jobs on Capitol Hill," said Ibrahim Hooper, the communications director for CAIR. "There's a Muslim Staffer Association. Should they be investigated?"

Yes Hooper, every Islamic organization here should be investigated.

The proclamation from the four Republicans came in advance of a book, entitled "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that's Conspiring to Islamize America," which includes a forward by Myrick. The author of the book, Dave Gaubatz, an anti-Islam activist who wrote last year that “a vote for Hussein Obama is a vote for Sharia Law.”

The lawmakers also released a one page "strategy" document they said they obtained from CAIR. But the document basically lays out a fairly straight forward public relations and lobbying strategy and indeed, one of the goals is "placing Muslim interns in congressional offices" and registering people to vote.

Hooper ridiculed the claims.

"All they can come up with is that we are political active?" Hooper asked. "The terror threat is that Muslims are politically active?"

Hey Hooper, I don't see anyone saying that Muslims being political active is a terrorist threat. So lets stick to the facts here. The country is waking up to the fact the Muslims use the freedoms of the US to help advance Islam. If Islam ends up dominating the country, non-Muslims will lose numerous rights here. This is about the political aspect of Islam.

This comment that Hooper had made in the past, says it all.

"I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future...But I'm not going to
do anything violent to promote that. I'm going to do it through education."

Hooper pointed out that there are indeed many Muslim staffers on Capitol Hill, CAIR is a lobbying organization, and its executive director is on Capitol Hill today — speaking at an interfaith forum on health care with other religious groups in the Rayburn building.

Hooper like I have been saying, within the law your organization will be take down. It is just a matter of time.

CHICAGO - A leader of a Chicago Muslim advocacy group says she's pleased President Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. But she's waiting for follow-through on pledges for Middle East peace and ending wars.

Christina Abraham is a director at the Chicago branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. She says Obama was awarded the prize based on promise and not for his achievements so far.

In announcing the award Friday morning, the Norwegian Nobel Committee praised the change in global mood brought on by Obama's calls for peace and his initiatives to ease tensions with the Muslim world.

The Muslim group's officials say the Nobel award shows there's been a noticeable shift in U.S. diplomacy and efforts to reach out to Muslims, but more work needs to be done.

Feds May Look Into Attack on Ann Arbor Muslims

I am completely against what happened to these two teenagers, but I am also against Muslims continually using our freedoms to try and get non-Muslims to respect Islam. Ann Arbor -- The attorney for two Muslim teens attacked last month aboard a school bus is asking the U.S. Department of Justice to step in after Washtenaw County prosecutors decided not to file ethnic intimidation charges in the case.

The girl, 16, and her brother, 15, were attacked Sept. 8 after they left Skyline High School.

They said the incident began aboard a school bus and escalated after they got off the bus several blocks from their home.

The girl said a group of black teens removed her hijab, a traditional head scarf, and yelled ethnic slurs at her and her brother before punching her. The girl suffered a black eye and said she required stitches to the top of her head. Neither teen is being identified.

The prosecutor's office said it found no evidence the attack was motivated by their ethnicity.

"We did not feel there was sufficient evidence to justify prosecution for that based on information that was gathered by the Ann Arbor Police Department," said Steven Hiller, the deputy chief assistant prosecutor for the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office.

The girl's attorney, Nabih Ayad, expressed outraged over the prosecutor's decision.
Ayad said the case "is clear" that the girl was a victim of a hate crime and said he will be filing a civil lawsuit.

Dawud Walid, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Michigan, said his office "will be closely monitoring the outcome of the court proceedings as well as any possible involvement in this matter by the U.S. Department of Justice."

The four attackers will still face juvenile civil charges, Hiller said. He would not elaborate on what punishment they may receive.

Permission slips for Bible class called mistake in Roseville school

After complaints raised by a Muslim group, Roseville Community Schools said Thursday the district erred in allowing permission slips to be distributed to elementary school students that would allow them to attend Bible classes in a Baptist church.

And it will now review district policies on permission slips for religious classes.

"We shouldn't have made the slips available," said Michael LaFeve, assistant superintendent for the district.

Two weeks ago, students at Huron Park Elementary School in Roseville received permission slips to participate in Bible classes at Temple Baptist Church, also in the city. The classes were to be conducted once a month by RBM Ministries of Kalamazoo.

The parents of a Muslim student expressed concerns that the permission slips appeared to advertise a specific church, said Dawud Walid, head of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Walid wrote a letter Thursday to the school's principal and the district superintendent, alleging the district was favoring one religion and denomination.

Bob Goodenough, executive director of RBM Ministries, said that state law allows for children to be excused from class for religious services.

"I don't believe there's any violation. ... There's no discrimination." he said.

Congressman Ellison Meets With CAIR Despite Ariz. Congressional Warning

A few days ago Islamocongressman Keith Ellison was given a letter from a Congressional delegation, stating that he should stay away from the Islamic terrorist supporters of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). Mr. Ellison has once again shown us which side he is on, and has defied the request. Voting for Muslims is a mistake, as they will use the power to advance their Islamic agenda.

The only Muslim in Congress defied criticism from Arizona's congressional delegation and spoke Friday at a fundraiser for the local chapter of a national organization with suspected links to Hamas.

U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and U.S. Reps. Trent Franks and John Shadegg, both Arizona Republicans, wrote a letter urging Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., to shun the Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"We are deeply concerned that any official support of this organization would undermine the legitimate concerns of federal investigators about CAIR's relationship to foreign terrorist organizations," the letter said.

But Ellison, a Muslim convert, came anyway and was applauded by about 300 people who attended a dinner at the Hilton Phoenix East/ Mesa. Ellison spoke about the fresh start in relations with Islamic countries under President Barack Obama's administration.

"I would never associate myself with anyone even soft on terrorism," he said before the speech. "We all want to fight terror. We all want to live in a safe community."

The fears Kyl, Franks and Shadegg expressed in the letter are "ridiculous," he said.

A popular national chain of clothing stores is being sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for allegedly not hiring a Muslim Tulsa teenager because she wears a hijab, a religiously mandated head scarf.

The EEOC filed the lawsuit Wednesday against Abercrombie & Fitch in U.S. District Court in Tulsa, citing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, modified in 1991, as the basis for the action.

The suit says that Samantha Elauf, 17, applied in June 2008 for a sales job at the Abercrombie Kids store in Woodland Hills Mall.

A district manager allegedly told her that the hijab, which Elauf wears in observance of her religious beliefs, did not fit the store's image.

"Defendant refused to hire Ms. Elauf because she wears a hijab, claiming that the wearing of headgear was prohibited by its Look Policy, and, further, failed to accommodate her religious beliefs by making an exception to the Look Policy," the lawsuit states.

Elauf went to the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Oklahoma, which helped her file a complaint with the EEOC in Oklahoma City.

The Civil Rights Act protects people from discrimination based upon religion in hiring and in the terms of their employment, an EEOC press release says.

The law requires employers to reasonably accommodate the religious practices of an employee unless doing so would create an "undue hardship" for the employer.

CAIR Wants to Silence Internet and Talk Radio Critics of Islam

Just like President Obama and his crew want to silence the opposition, so does the Council on American Islamic Relations, (CAIR). It is very telling that neither Obama or CAIR has said a word about the Islamic preachers of hate in America. CAIR is seeking federal hate crime charges in the attacks on a mother and daughter in Smithtown, N.Y., and a taxi driver in Pleasanton, Calif.

Florida Anti-Islam Church Steps it up a Notch!

Just days ago the terrorist supporters from the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), complained about the anti-Islam signs outside of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainsville Florida. Not only did the Church not take down the original signs, they have bravely added another one.

Just for the record, each time the Church put up a sign, the liberal Gainsville Sun went running to CAIR for answers. Obviously they have done no research on CAIR or Islam. They have even banned me from leaving comments on their site.

A new sign paraphrasing a quote from the Quran has been placed in front of the Dove World Outreach Center in northwest Gainesville, where an earlier anti-Islamic sign has stirred protests.

The new sign reads "Koran 9:5 Kill the disbelievers wherever you find them." It joins a series of signs that read "Islam is of the devil," which were placed in front of the church recently.

A church pastor could not be reached Friday for comment.

Ramzy Kilic, Tampa's executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who met Tuesday with Dove World Senior Pastor Terry Jones, said the new sign's message is not the common wording on that Quran verse and added it has been isolated from a broader context.

"Anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim, can take a verse, isolate it and almost formulate it to an idea they want to convey," Kilic said. "When you take something out of context, you are not appreciating the true message of the religion."

Kilic added, "With the sign, it seems like (Jones) is antagonizing Muslims and wants to continue spreading a message of hate."

Jones told The Sun in July that the initial sign was "an act of saying there is only one way, and that is actually what Christianity is about. It is about pointing the people in the right direction, and that right direction is Jesus and only Jesus."

Jones called the sign a "great act of love."

Florida Church Will Not Bow to CAIR!

The Gainsville Florida Church which has recently put up a sign that stated "Islam is of the Devil", was approached by the Hamas supporters, the Council on American Islamic Relations, (CAIR). CAIR of course wanted the Church to take the sign down but the Church stayed strong and told them no. I applaud them.

An advocate for the Muslim community in Florida, during a one-on-one meeting Tuesday, was unable to persuade the senior pastor of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville to remove a sign that reads "Islam is of the devil."

"I was pleased that at least he was making the bridge to meet with me," said Ramzy Kiliç, Tampa's executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. "It doesn't seem like (taking down the sign) is going to happen, and he didn't want to know more about Islam."

Kiliç met with Jones for about 25 minutes Tuesday at the Dove World Outreach Center, 5805 N.W. 37th St., which has a series of hand-painted signs that read in red "Islam is of the devil."

Senior Pastor Terry Jones was not available for an interview Tuesday.

Jones told The Sun at the beginning of the month that the sign was "an act of saying there is only one way, and that is actually what Christianity is about. It is about pointing the people in the right direction, and that right direction is Jesus and only Jesus."

Jones called the sign a "great act of love."

Kiliç said his concern isn't based on the fact that the sign is offensive to him personally, but rather the fear that it might galvanize a subset of the population to act violently against a Mosque or even worse a Muslim individual.

"I don't think (Terry Jones) had any intent to be hateful to Muslims, but I just think he sees the Bible as the only way to God," Kiliç said of Jones and the church.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, is a national non-profit organization that works on civil rights issues on behalf of Muslim Americans.

The center in Tampa received calls from concerned citizens in Gainesville and Kiliç said that prompted him to set up the meeting Tuesday to try to convince Jones to remove the sign.

Kiliç said that Jones demonstrated very little knowledge about Islam during the meeting.

Jones has an honorary doctorate in theology from the California Graduate School of Theology.

"A lot of the things he was raising were not even about Islam. They were about countries with Muslim majorities," Kiliç said. "Many Muslims come to America so they can practice Islam freely. I don't even consider Osama bin Laden a Muslim."

The faith of Islam believes that Jesus Christ was a prophet but not the son of God, a strong dividing point between Christianity's belief that Jesus Christ is the one true savior and the son of God.

And while the Bible focuses on the life and teachings of Jesus, the Quran, or holy book for Islam, is the revelation made by the prophet Muhammad.

Kiliç said these two teachings are not mutually exclusive and have much in common that can be reconciled with the same message that both Jesus and Muhammad preached of "one God and free will to accept God."

Prayer dispute settled: Walmart rehires fired Muslim worker

A major retail chain has rehired a fired Muslim employee in the Twin Cities and is now accommodating his right to pray in the workplace, an Islamic civil rights organization in Minnesota is reporting.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations announced Monday that Walmart agreed to the accommodation after CAIR-MN intervened on behalf of employee Abdi Abdi, who was fired from his job in February as a stocker and loader at the Woodbury store.

CAIR-MN says that Abdi, a four-year employee with Walmart, was let go for violating a new supervisor's ban on prayer during work breaks. A previous supervisor had allowed him to perform his daily prayers, the organization said.

Abdi was rehired last month at a Walmart in St. Paul and is now allowed to pray during breaks, following negotiations between CAIR-MN and local and national representatives of Walmart, the St. Paul-based rights group said.

"We appreciate Walmart's handling of this case and its willingness to accommodate the religious practices of employees," CAIR-MN Civil Rights Coordinator Zahra Aljabri said.

Abdi was rehired at the Walmart in the Midway area of St. Paul because it is closer to his home, his wife works there and managers at that store are "more familiar with the prayer schedule," Aljabri said. "At least a dozen" Muslims work at the Midway Walmart, she said.

As part of the agreement, Walmart has agreed to send about 10 of their employees for diversity training next month that CAIR-MN is conducting, Aljabri said.

A spokeswoman for Walmart has been contacted for comment today, and a response is pending.

Aljabri noted that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Minnesota Human Rights Act protect the right of any employee with a bona fide religious belief to have accommodation in the workplace as long as that accommodation does not cause "undue hardship" for the employer.

A controversial Islamic group is hosting a conference at the Oak Lawn Hilton Sunday, bringing with it a message of the evils of capitalism.

It' s called Hizb ut-Tahrir America, a faction of the international Hizb ut-Tahrir group, which advocates for implementing Islamic doctrine across the globe by organizing into a unified caliphate, a form of rule based on the Islamic religion.

Although the group dismisses democracy - the theme of Sunday's conference is the "Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islam" - they hope to elect one Muslim worldwide ruler, or caliph, and hold that person accountable.

The conference, widely believed to be the first of its kind in America, includes lectures titled "The Suffering Under Capitalism" and "Ownership and Distribution of Wealth in Islam."

Multiple e-mails to a conference spokesman were not returned Thursday, but according to the conference Web site, Hizb ut-Tahrir "works to cultivate a Muslim community that lives by Islam in thought and deed, whereby adhering to the rules of Islam and preserving a strong Islamic identity. The party does not work in the West to change the system of government, but works to project a positive image of Islam to Western society and engages in dialogue with Western thinkers, policymakers and academics."

Critics say that's a revisionist overview of the group's role.

Junaid Afeef, executive director of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, said Hizb ut-Tahrir's role locally has been relegated to fringe literature passed out at local mosques.

He said the group's "conspiracy theorist" teachings aren't "grounded in authentic Islam or rooted in reality."

As for the idea of caliphate, Afeef said that's an "aspirational" goal for all Muslims - just not in the way it's billed in Hizb ut-Tahrir promotional literature.

He explained that caliphate is "an idea that we need to work toward justice and just society, one that's ruled in a manner that promotes justice and equality to all people.

"That idea of a worldwide global empire run by a Muslim leader," he said, "it's a farce."

Sunday's conference was recently canceled when its original host, the Aqsa School in Bridgeview, retracted its invitation after school officials said Hizb ut-Tahrir misrepresented its intentions.

A representative of the school said the group said it wanted to host a bazaar to sell food and clothes, but when school officials learned more about the planned event they declined to host it.

On its Web site, Hizb ut-Tahrir refutes the school's claim, saying the school knew its plans all along.

The event found a new home at the Oak Lawn Hilton, 9333 S. Cicero Ave.
A hotel manager said the company is giving the group the same treatment as any other customers. They are, however, hiring extra security.

The gathering has drawn the ire of a Washington, D.C.-based peace group.
Jeffrey Imm, founder of Responsible for Equality and Liberty (REAL) group, called Hizb ut-Tahrir "Islamic supremacists" hoping to "impose their religious beliefs, their religious views on a form of governance and theocracy over other people.

"It's a systematic ideology of what we believe is institutionalized hate."

Imm is planning a protest to coincide with Sunday's conference, which begins at 11 a.m. and runs to 5:30 p.m.

"They have the right to speak against democracy," he said. "We have the right and responsibility to speak out for equality and liberty."

Afeef, with Chicago's Council of Islamic Organizations, said his group has a very active youth program and hopes the leaflets and Facebook pages that Hizb ut-Tahrir is using to advertise its Sunday's gathering aren't effective.

"If we see they draw a lot of people, that would be a great concern for us," he said. "It's antithetical to what we believe."

Wisconsin:Muslims Get "Racially" Offensive Fireworks off Shelves

Muslims from Minnesota are at it once again. In the past they tried to pressure the Long John Silver fast food chain to drop a toy that was "offensive" to Muslims. This time they have crossed the border to Wisconsin and targeted a brand of fireworks which they deemed "racist".

Fireworks called Run Hadji Run were pulled off the shelves of a Wisconsin store after Minnesota Muslims complained that they were racist.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) said that the name and the packaging are demeaning. One side of the package has a drawing of Uncle Sam yanking the long beard of a man in traditional Muslim attire, while the other shows a Stealth bomber flying over a group of Arabs riding camels. In addition, "Hadji" is an honorific for those who have completed the pilgrimage to Mecca.

"I've seen other fireworks that I thought were pushing the line on being offensive, but this clearly went too far," Jessica Zikri, the communications director of CAIR-MN, said Saturday. "Hopefully, this will help keep other groups from being targeted this way."

The company that imported the fireworks from China, Missouri-based Red Rhino Fireworks, said that they are at least three years old and were distributed by the firm's previous owners. But they are still listed in the company's online catalog, which said they send off 16 red, green and blue "strobe comets" over a period of 28 seconds.

They were discovered by a shopper Friday afternoon at Fireworks City in Baldwin, Wis. Reports of their existence reached CAIR-MN, which demanded their removal and they were removed from the sales stock late Friday.

Because the fireworks were distributed several years ago, there's no way of telling if other stores still have some, Zikri acknowledged.

"But we're happy that this store saw the logic" of halting sales, she said. "We contacted [Red Rhino], and hopefully they will tell other stores to get rid of any remaining product they might have."

CAIR's "Share the Quran" educational campaign was prompted by President Obama's recent address to Muslims worldwide in which he quoted from that holy text.

In the multi-year initiative, American Muslims will sponsor Qurans for distribution to governors, state attorneys general, educators, law enforcement officials, state and national legislators, local elected and public officials, media professionals, and other local or national leaders who shape public opinion or determine policy.

Tampa Drops Annual CAIR day

Earlier this year the FBI stated that they were cutting off ties with the Council on American Islamic Relations, as the country is finally waking up to their true agenda. Now the noose around their necks has tightened as the mayor of Tampa has ended a four year tradition of honoring CAIR. Hopefully other sections of Florida will follow suit and put an end to the Islamic bus ad campaigns started by CAIR.

Tampa mayor ends proclamations for American-Islamic group

TAMPA — Mayor Pam Iorio has declined to honor the Council on American-Islamic Relations this year, ending a four-year tradition of proclaiming an annual CAIR Day.

Iorio said the Tampa Jewish Federation suggested several months ago that she take a closer look at CAIR, which has been accused of having ties to terrorist groups.

"We issued the proclamations in the past based on best available information. And now we're not going to issue proclamations based on best available information," Iorio said.

The group Americans Against Hate claimed credit for Iorio's decision in a news release on Wednesday. But Iorio said she was unfamiliar with the group.

"I don't even know what they are about," she said.

Americans Against Hate has long been lobbying Iorio's office to revoke last year's proclamation.

The group forwarded information to Santiago Corrada, the city's neighborhood services director, about CAIR being named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Texas trial of a now-defunct Muslim charity. Five of the charity's officers were convicted on charges they funneled more than $12 million to Hamas, a Palestinian group considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

Americans Against Hate also shared news reports that the FBI has cut some of its ties to CAIR.

Iorio said Corrada might have mentioned his contact with the group in passing, but she did her own research on CAIR. She wouldn't say where she got her information.

Americans Against Hate, based in Broward County, describes itself as a civil rights and terrorism watchdog group whose goal "is to be an active voice against those who spread bigotry and violence," according to its Web site. State corporation records list three directors: Joe Kaufman, Susan Naftali and Philip Hersh.

The group focuses much of its efforts on CAIR, a Washington, D.C., group with more than 30 chapters in the United States and Canada.

Ramzy Kilic, executive director of the Tampa chapter of CAIR, accused Americans Against Hate of a smear campaign. He said Kaufman fought expansion of a mosque in Pompano Beach, saying "it should not exist on American shores."

"It's unfortunate that our honorable Mayor Pam Iorio has succumbed to the pressure of anti-Muslim extremists such as Joe Kaufman," he said.

CAIR is a civil rights organization that seeks to enhance understanding of Islam, Kilic said.

"We're going to continue our noble work in defending the civil rights of all Americans. People will continue to attack us for the work we've done and the work we do," he said.

Since 2005, Iorio has named a CAIR Day, with proclamations praising the group for promoting civil rights and diversity.

Muslims Criticize Producers of Seattle Police Training Program

Another day....another complaint by Muslims. Recently over a dozen US Islamic organizations have made it clear that they do not care for how the authorities handle the threat of Islamic terrorism. American Muslims have now added a Seattle police training program to their list of complaints. All because the program is run by a by a Jewish organization.

The Seattle Police Department is going ahead with a racial-awareness training program that some local Muslims object to — not because of its content, but because of its sponsor, the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Saying it's not going to take sides in someone else's feud, the Seattle Police Department is going ahead with a racial-awareness training program that has raised concerns among some local Muslims.

They are troubled not by the content of the training program but by the organization that produced it: the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a 32-year-old Los Angeles-based Jewish human-rights organization perhaps best known for its Holocaust education work.

They accuse the Wiesenthal Center of spreading fear toward Islam by producing or promoting films about extremism within Islam. And they, like many other Muslims elsewhere, are also angry at the center for building a Museum of Tolerance in Jerusalem partially on top of what once was an ancient Muslim cemetery.

"The center has an anti-Muslim agenda, to be frank," contends Arsalan Bukhari, president of the Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The Wiesenthal Center disagrees.

The disputed land on which the Jerusalem museum is being built has been used as a parking lot for about the past 50 years, according to the center. And Liebe Geft, director of the center's Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, says the films in question take on anti-Semitism and the dangers of a small subsection of Islam, not Islam as a whole.

The center "does not condemn Islam. It actively confronts Islamophobia," Geft said.

The Seattle Police Department got caught in the middle when it began looking for a training program for employees on race issues.

It found Perspectives on Profiling, a Wiesenthal Center program geared toward people in law enforcement. The program features interactive exercises and vignettes on CD-ROM of real-life scenarios officers might encounter.

The goal is to make officers more conscious of what and how they think about race, and how their thinking might affect the split-second decisions they make on the streets every day.

The department considered other programs but "this was far and away the best quality," said Deputy Chief Clark Kimerer. The cost was also "remarkably low," he said: about $18,000.

Nationwide, about 17,900 officers have gone through Perspectives on Profiling training at the Wiesenthal Center's facilities in Los Angeles and New York.

An additional 24 organizations have purchased the program. And about 100,000 people have gone through the Wiesenthal Center's broader programs for law enforcement, Geft said.

So far, about 28 people from the Seattle Police Department have been through the training program. Some will, in turn, train the rest of the department's employees, starting perhaps as early as this fall.

In time, the department also hopes to offer the training to the community at large.

That decision disappoints a local coalition composed of mainly Muslims, but including people of other faiths as well.

They say Seattle police should not be undertaking training sponsored by a group they believe is spreading fear of Muslims, regardless of how good the training is.

They point to, for instance, the center producing the film "Ever Again," which the Museum of Tolerance describes as exposing "the dangerous Islamic extremism and culture of death being preached from the mosques of Europe's major cities."

Geft, the Museum of Tolerance director, says moderate Muslims who criticize extremists have prominent voices in the film and "every exhibit in the museum does the same. We don't want to leave the image of the radical extremist representing all Muslims."

At one point, Seattle police considered asking the Wiesenthal Center to remove its name from the training here — a course of action the department ultimately decided not to follow.

While respecting that people feel strongly about the issue, "we can't put ourselves in the middle," Kimerer said. "Our goal is to find the best quality training."

Court asks FBI for Muslim surveillance files

SANTA ANA – The widening rift between the FBI and the Islamic community has drawn the American Civil Liberties Union into the fray, with the organization's lawyers declaring victory in their efforts to force the release of government surveillance records on Southern California Muslims.

A federal district court judge Monday gave the FBI 30 days to make available for review 48 pages of surveillance memos pertaining to Southern California Muslim organizations that had previously been released only in heavily redacted form, 47 pages of previously withheld memos, and FBI files on the Council of American Islamic Relations and Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the group's Southern Californian Chapter, ACLU staff attorney Jennie Pasquarella said.

Ayloush and Shakeel Syed, the executive director of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, joined Pasquarella in the courtyard of the federal courthouse in Santa Ana minutes after the judge's ruling, declaring the decision a victory for Muslim organizations.

"We are exercising our first amendment rights, and we are running out of patience," Syed said.

FBI representatives forwarded requests for comment to Department of Justice officials, who could not be immediately reached for comment. Federal officials have previously denied charges by several national Islamic organizations that the government has taken part in "fishing expeditions" by sending informants to ensnare Muslims at area Mosques.

A coalition of Islamic organizations known as the American Muslim Taskforce last month threatened to cut ties with the FBI, accusing the agency of using "McCarthy-era tactics."

The announcement came on the heels of Irvine resident Craig Monteilh's public admission that he spent more than a year pretending to embrace Islam at various local mosques as part of an FBI-backed effort to uncover terrorist threats.

Monteilh claimed his work played a key role in the arrest of Ahmadullah Niazi, a Tustin-resident and member of the Islamic Center of Irvine, on several immigration-fraud charges.

But Islamic leaders claim the FBI violated the sanctity of the Islamic religion by sending in Monteilh, a felon who previously served a prison term for conning two women out of more than $150,000.

"While we were led to believe we were partners, we learned we were also under surveillance," Syed said.

The FBI previously declined to comment on the specific allegations brought by the Islamic groups, but pledged to continue outreach efforts with the Muslim community and warned against "limiting honest dialogue, especially when complex issues are on the table."

Muslim leaders say the rift between the FBI and the larger Islamic community has also widened because of the agency's deteriorating relationship with the Council of American Islamic Relations.

In the months following the 911 attacks, the group's officials say they helped the FBI reach out to Muslims and with cultural sensitivity training.

But the group in 2007 came under fire when it was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a terrorist funding case against the Holy Land Foundation.

The FBI recently announced that it has ended its own formal partnership with the council, whose leaders have denied any terrorist links.

Ayloush said he hoped this week's court ruling could spark a "healing phase" between the Muslim community and the FBI.

"We're hoping this will begin the process of undoing this climate of fear," Ayloush said.

As they sipped tea and nibbled on dates, more than 100 men and women listened to a litany of speakers sounding the same message: The FBI is not your friend.

"We're here today to say our mosques are off limits," Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations for Greater Los Angeles, told the crowd last month at an Anaheim mosque.

"Our Koran is off limits," Ayloush said. "Our youth, who they try to radicalize, are off limits. Now is the time to tell them, 'We're not going to let this happen anymore.' "

Such strong words from a man who once was a vocal advocate of ties with federal law enforcement was yet one more signal that the fragile relationship between Muslim American groups and the FBI is being tested.

In the months and years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, FBI officials met privately with Muslim leaders, assuring them that a spate of hate crimes would be vigorously investigated and at the same time asking for help in the campaign against terrorism. Local leaders promised to encourage cooperation.

But even as relations warmed, a series of revelations -- including allegations that the FBI sent an informant into a mosque in Orange County, surveilled community leaders and sent an agent to UC Irvine -- caused some to begin questioning the FBI's real intentions.

Now, the leaders of several Muslim organizations say they feel betrayed. Because Orange County has been at the center of many of the revelations, local leaders have taken a lead in challenging the FBI, but the issues are resonating nationwide.

On Sunday, a coalition of the nation's largest Muslim organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Muslim Public Affairs Council and the Islamic Society of North America, issued a statement demanding that the Obama administration address FBI actions, including what they describe as the "infiltration of mosques," the use of "agent provocateurs to trap unsuspecting Muslim youth" and the "deliberate vilification" of the council.

"It reached a level where we felt we had to do something," said Agha Saeed, chairman of the American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights and Elections. "The FBI is doing things which are not healthy. They are creating divisions and conflict, creating a totally negative, Islamophobic image of Muslims in America."

Over the years, there's been a gradual erosion of trust between the groups and the FBI. Months ago, the agency told local leaders it was suspending relations with the council, one of the largest Muslim civil rights groups in the country.

Since then, things have unraveled rapidly. Like other Muslim communities in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, many in Orange County -- home to more than 100,000 Muslim Americans, dozens of mosques and several prominent Muslim community organizations -- worried about FBI investigations.

The FBI, in turn, believed terrorists were either trying to get to Southern California to carry out attacks or were already here. To gain intelligence and demystify the agency's operations, the FBI met with local leaders and formed a committee that met monthly.

"In the post-9/11 world, the Arab American and Muslim community became one of those places where we said, 'It's worth making the extra effort,' " said FBI spokesman John Miller, who is also in charge of the agency's national community outreach program.

Early on, Ayloush said the FBI was acting in good faith and working with the community as "partners rather than suspects."

But the delicate relationship soon began to fray.

In 2004, the FBI and immigration officials arrested the popular head of an Anaheim mosque; he was held on immigration-related charges for two years until a judge ordered his release pending deportation. In 2006, an FBI agent was quoted as telling a business group in Newport Beach that the agency was monitoring Muslims at local universities. A year later, UC Irvine students said an FBI agent conducting an investigation at the school assaulted a Muslim student with his car near the site of a demonstration.

On a national level, there was the disclosure that FBI agents had been secretly monitoring radiation levels at mosques in search of radioactive bombs. More troubling were news reports that Muslims had been asked to become informants or face deportation.

The breaking point came in February with the revelation that the FBI had sent an informant to an Irvine mosque to collect evidence of jihadist rhetoric and other allegedly extremist acts by a Tustin man who attended prayers there.

To some, the incidents added up to this conclusion: The government was targeting all Muslims. Miller strongly disputes that contention, saying that the agency does not go on "fishing expeditions."

"What we investigate is people," he said. "If we develop information on a person, that investigation may take us different places -- to their home, their place of business . . . and yes, if . . . they go to a mosque, the investigation may take us to the mosque. That is part of what we do."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations was named in 2007, along with hundreds of other organizations and individuals, as an unindicted co-conspirator in a case against the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation, which the government accused of funneling money to terrorists.

As a result, the FBI suspended relations with the council this year.

"That is not to suggest that anyone or everyone associated with CAIR has any kind of taint," Miller said, adding that "there are some issues we would like to know more about from the leaders at CAIR's headquarters."

But at the recent meeting at the Anaheim mosque, the tone was one of frustration and anger.

Speakers suggested that ordinary Muslim Americans need to protect themselves from overzealous FBI agents.

"You don't get brownie points for speaking to them," said Ameena Qazi, a lawyer for the council. "They don't go back to the office and check off your civic engagement or your patriotism. . . . We are a very open and hospitable community, but we shouldn't be naive."

Attendees applauded Qazi's statement, but it was a mea culpa that most moved them.

"We goofed up, guys," said Shakeel Syed, head of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California. "We brought them here. We brought them to our mosques, to our meetings. . . . We have to hold ourselves responsible. That's why it's so important to dig our heels into the ground and say we're not going to take this lying down, we're going to fight."

He got the loudest applause of the night.
