What is Wrong with Bouchard-Taylor Report

The 3.7 m. dollar Bouchard-Taylor report that was commissioned to recommend
\"reasonable accommodations\" of ethnic and religious
minorities in Quebec is finally released. However, it raises more questions
that it answers.
This intellectual duo*, who spent months preparing the 310 page report, wants
to place more emphasis on integration and less on individuation that would
eventually lead to segregation and alienation. That is a noble thought. The
problem is that right after talking about the importance of integration they
propose “dissemination of pluralism.”
Aren’t integration and pluralism two opposing concepts? In politics we need
pluralism or we will have dictatorship. But in society, we need integration..
Pluralism leads to isolationism, alienation and estrangement. What glues a
nation together, are its shared values. Culture, tradition, beliefs and
language are values that bind us together. If we have nothing in common, what
will unite us?
Is cultural pluralism a good thing? Do all cultures have inherently something
good to offer? Is, for example, a culture that advocates hatred of outsiders
and gender apartheid, equal to a culture that promotes inclusiveness and
equality?
One of the recommendations of the Bouchard-Taylor report is “intercultural
harmonization.” How can we promote pluralism and harmonization at the same
time? Aren’t these two concepts mutually exclusive?
Mr. Taylor, says, “Compromise and reciprocity are the two key words. You give
a little bit, I give a little bit, and we all put some water in our wine.”
This works only when the other side also believes in compromise and
reciprocity, is willing to give in and put some water in his wine. If he is not
willing to compromise, the only wine that will be watered down will be the wine
of the Western culture.
Some cultures do not compromise. Take the example of Islam. Islam is now
culture, now religion, now political system and now race. It can be anything,
depending on the situation. However, Islam cannot change. You cannot water it
down, reform it or modernize it. The Quran is emphatic that Islam is perfect
(Q: 5:3). No Muslim will tolerate reforming his religion that was perfected by
God. Consequently, the only culture that will have to give in to the point of
extinction will be the Western culture.
It is this culture that gave birth to enlightenment, democracy and ushered
mankind to modernity. It is this culture that brought the collective humanity
out of the Dark Ages into the present world. It is to this culture that we owe
our freedom. If any culture has to be protected it is the Western culture. Yet,
it is this culture alone that today is facing extinction – because it is being
watered down through immigration, multiculturalism and the suicidal disinterest
of its members, who are willing to bend backwards to accommodate every inferior
culture except protecting their own.
Other recommendations of the commission are to take “exceptional measures to
combat Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.” They also recommend fighting against
discrimination, with emphasis on hate crimes.
However, these recommendations are contradictory. There are some teachings of
Islam that are anti-Semitic, misogynist, hateful and discriminatory. How then
can we reconcile these two conflicting recommendations?
The Quran repeatedly calls the Jews apes and swine, and says they are despised
and rejected (2:65, 5:60, 7:166). Every day, Muslims are required to recite the
opening sura of the Quran that says Christians and Jews have gone astray and
that the wrath of God will be on them. According to the Quran, women are
inferior (4.32) and should their husband suspect disobedience, they can abuse
them verbally and emotionally, and even beat them (4.34). The Quran says
homosexuality is abomination (27:54) and the Sharia (Islamic law) prescribes
death for homosexuals. According to the Sharia, apostates also should be
killed. The Quran is insistent that the non-Muslims are unclean (9:28), that
Muslims should not take them as friends (3:28), associate with them (9:23), or
obey them as rulers (25:52).
There are many verses in the Quran that exhort the believers to be harsh with
non-Muslims (9:73), fight them (2:193, 2:216, 4:84, 8:65, 9:5, 9:14, 9:73),
cast terror into their hearts (3:151, 8:12), and even kill them (2:191, 9:5,
47:4).
Are we allowed to criticize these teachings? Not according to Bouchard and
Taylor who want us to be charged with Islamophobia if we do. But if we don’t,
we would be tolerating anti-Semitism, discrimination against women and hate
against all non Muslims.
A fact that seems to escape everyone is that Islam is not a race but a belief
system. Beliefs do not have to be protected by law. Christianity is not
protected, Judaism is not protected, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, the Bahai
Faith, Paganism, Shintoism… none of these faiths are protected. Anyone is
free to criticize any religion. Then why Islam has to be protected by law? Why
the government should spend the tax money of the very people Islam calls
filthy, apes and pigs to protect it? The government’s responsibility is to
protect people, their rights and their lives and not religious beliefs. It is
the lives of the apostates of Islam that are in danger and need to be
protected, not Islam that says kill the apostates.
How can we compare Islamophobia with anti-Semitism? Semites are a people; Islam
is a belief. These are apples and oranges. People need protection; beliefs
don’t. It’s human rights that have to be protected, not human faiths.
Then again, Islamophobia is a misnomer. Phobia is an unfounded and irrational
fear. Since 9/11, 2001, there have been over 11,000 terrorist attacks
throughout the world, all perpetrated by the followers of “the religion of
peace.” On Feb. 13, 2007, the CBC published the results of an Environics
poll, where fully 12% of Canadian Muslims said the aborted terrorist plot –
that included kidnapping and beheading the Canadian prime minister and blowing
up the Parliament and the CBC – was justified. 12% of 700,000 Muslims living
in Canada means 84,000 Canadian Muslims support terrorism. They finance it;
they take part in it.
Can we afford not to fear Islam? Is the fear of Islam, phobia? One must be
foolhardy not to fear Islam. Read the Quran! Listen to the sermons in the
mosques and pay attention to what Muslims do. Are these not enough reasons to
fear Islam?
The truth is that Islam is incompatible with human rights, gender equality,
democracy, integration, harmonization and everything that the Bouchard-Taylor
commission intends to achieve. Muslims will never integrate, unless they give
up Islam and consider themselves Canadians first. It is ironic that these two
highly intellectual men undermine their own recommendations and include Islam
as something to be protected. On one hand they want to promote secularism and
recommend the religious symbols of the founders, and the majority of the
Quebecois to be taken down from public buildings, and on the other hand they
suggest that government should shield Islam from criticism and incriminate
those who speak against its violent, discriminatory, and hate mongering
teachings.
Two thousand years ago, a Jewish carpenter said, “truth will set you free..”
This truism has never been truer than today. Let us stop this political
correctness. Let us tell the truth about Islam. Let us give truth a chance.

Italian Resistance, Mosque Crackdown!!
When in Rome, do not ask for Mosque construction is the new slogan coming out of Italy these days. As I predicted a few years ago, the lawful backlash towards the Islamic push for world conquest has started in Europe. Once again, the Muslim man speaking in this article, shows the one way street that Islam is. He wants to get Islamic countries to pressure Italy to allow Mosque construction. Excuse me aren't these the same Islamic countries that persecute Christians, Jews and all other forms of religion across the world? It is always a one way street with the Islamic world. They deserve the same amount of respect as they give, which is none. Which is now what they are getting in Italy.

Italy's far-right, anti-immigrant Northern League party has started its mission in the new government with bringing down a mosque in the northern city of Verona.
"[The mosque destruction] reinforces Muslim fears of seeing the League in the ruling coalition," Ali Abu Shwaima, the head of Milan-based Islamic Centre, told.
Bulldozers brought down last week a building housing a Muslim prayer room in the city.
"I never felt at ease with this mosque," Elisonder Antonneli, the head of Verona city council, said.
"This place will be turned into a park and a car parking space and will be named after (Italian writer) Oriana Fallaci."
Fallaci, who died in 2006, was notorious for anti-Islam stances.
Following the 9/11 attacks, the far-right writer published a book entitled "Rage and Pride" in which she ridiculed the Noble Qur'an.
She has also authored another book "The Force of Reason" in which she warned that Europe was turning into "an Islamic province, an Islamic colony" and that "to believe that a good Islam and a bad Islam exist goes against all reason."
The Northern League has four ministers in Silovio Berlusconi's government, including the portfolio of the Interior.
The League grabbed 8 percent of the vote in last month's general elections, securing Berlusconi's right-wing coalition a comfortable majority in the parliament.
The party has nearly doubled its parliamentary strength from 4.5 percent two years ago.
The Northern League is widely accused of racism with many critics calling it the BNP of Italy, a reference to the British right-wing party.
Its election campaign played on issues such as immigration crime and economic and cultural fears from immigration.
Hard Time
Abu Shwaima, the Muslim leader, said Italian Muslims will face hard times under the far-right league.
"We believe the life of Italian Muslims will get more complicated," he said.
He said Muslims in the city of Verona used to find spiritual comfort at the razed mosque.
"The mosque destruction is sign of spiraling Islamophobia in many European countries," he said.
There are nearly 20,000 Muslims in Verona.
"I used to pray in the mosque for years," an Italian Muslim in Verona told IOL, requesting anonymity.
"But this Friday I went to the mosque for prayers but I could not as it was razed.
"We live in a state of anticipation and fear after the mosque was destroyed and we want Arab and Muslim governments to pile pressures on Italy to stop anti-immigrant and anti-Islam policies."
Abu Shwaima, the Muslim leader, has a similar message.
"We want to tell the Muslim world that mosques' construction in Italy is almost a mission impossible.
"Except for the Milan-based Islamic Center and the Rome mosque, there are no real mosques in Italy."
Last November, former Italian deputy Education Minister and League member Mariella Mazzetto angered Muslims after parading a pig on the site of a planned mosque in the northern city of Padua.
Two months earlier, League senator Roberto Calderoli called for a "Pig Day" protest against the mosque construction in the northern city of Bologna.
In 2006, protesters left a pig's head at a mosque building site in the central Italian city of Tuscany.
Italy has a Muslim population of some 1.2 million, including 20,000 reverts, according to unofficial estimates.

It's Only a Few.....That's What They Keep Telling us
Those that follow the worldwide problem of Islam, continually hear the popular "it's only a few" excuse by the Islamic apologists. Well, I beg to differ. Lets finally put that excuse to rest.

Sector representatives say if implemented, it would mean that the sale of alcoholic beverages by the glass at establishments like restaurants and bars would not be allowed.

Results made public today by the government showed the Brotherhood winning 29 more seats in Saturday's runoff in the second round of parliamentary voting. The group won 47 seats in the first round this month, meaning that with just one more round of elections to go, the Brotherhood already has 76 seats - more than five times its total in the departing Parliament. Because of the group's outlaw status, its candidates run as independents.

Lebanon: Islamic Terrorist Group Hezbollah Gains Seats in Lebanese Government
After the 2005 elections, Hezbollah won fourteen seats in the 128-member Lebanese Parliament. In addition, Hezbollah has two ministers in the government, and a third is endorsed by the group.
Hezbollah did not disarm when it entered Lebanese politics, and experts say the group's new political involvement is not an indication that the group is becoming more moderate.

Mo, who Were you? A Terrorist That's who.
Many people just do not know the ugly truth about Islam or its prophet Mohammad. Either they do not take the time to do the research or they rely on the word of Muslims. Well, since Islam encourages lying, I would not recommend asking a Muslim. It is called al-Taqiyya. If you want to learn the truth about the religion, either do your own leg work or ask an ex Muslim.
From this excerpt from the Hadiths we can see how Mohammad would wage holy war on non Muslims if they did not accept Islam, or at least remain a non Muslim but live as a dhimmi under Islamic rule.
Book 019, Number 4294:
It has been reported from Sulaiman b. Buraid through his father that when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) appointed anyone as leader of an army or detachment he would especially exhort him to fear Allah and to be good to the Muslims who were with him. He would say: Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war, do not embezzle the spoils; do not break your pledge; and do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do not kill the children. When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. Then invite them to migrate from their lands to the land of Muhairs and inform them that, if they do so, they shall have all the privileges and obligations of the Muhajirs. If they refuse to migrate, tell them that they will have the status of Bedouin Muilims and will be subjected to the Commands of Allah like other Muslims, but they will not get any share from the spoils of war or Fai' except when they actually fight with the Muslims (against the disbelievers). If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them. When you lay siege to a fort and the besieged appeal to you for protection in the name of Allah and His Prophet, do not accord to them the guarantee of Allah and His Prophet, but accord to them your own guarantee and the guarantee of your companions for it is a lesser sin that the security given by you or your companions be disregarded than that the security granted in the name of Allah and His Prophet be violated When you besiege a fort and the besieged want you to let them out in accordance with Allah's Command, do not let them come out in accordance with His Command, but do so at your (own) command, for you do not know whether or not you will be able to carry out Allah's behest with regard to them.

Here it is shown that while Mohammad did not care for the deliberate killings of women and children. He had no concern for them during night raids and Mo was big on night raids.
Book 019, Number 4321:
It is reported on the authority of Sa'b b. Jaththama that the Prophet of Allah (may peace be upon him), when asked about the women and children of the polytheists being killed during the night raid, said: They are from them.

Allah's Apostle said, "I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand." Abu Huraira added: Allah's Apostle has left the world and now you, people, are bringing out those treasures (i.e. the Prophet did not benefit by them).

Paying for our own Demise
I was watching the end of Hannity and cowardly Colmes last night. Mr. Hannity was speaking about how just as early as next year that Americans may be paying up to $10 a gallon of gas. Just imagine what the Islamofascists will do with all that extra oil money. They are already picking us apart piece by piece. With the extra money they can open up more Mosques and madrases here and in Europe. No thanks, there are already more then enough of them here already. More money, means more money to attack the minds of our children in our universities as the Saudis continue to buy influence on our campus grounds. Higher oil prices mean more money to fund Islamic terrorist groups like Hezbollah, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. More terrorist training and more military equipment for them and lastly more cash to lobby our gutless Saudi ass kissing politicians. Our politicians and country have done NOTHING for decades to help ourselves here at home in regards to the energy issue. They talk and talk about it but take no action. Well action is what we NEED. We need to start drilling for oil here at home. We should be inviting our old but new Allie France who has almost 80% of its electricity coming from nuclear plants over here to give us a helping hand with building them. France and nuke plants. We have gotten nothing but lip service for long enough. We have to FORCE our politicians hand to take action. Before we become slaves to the Middle East.
So are you going to just sit there, read this and then go about your daily business? Or are you going to take action and contact your local representatives today? When you do call or write. Don't be shy. Let them know straight out that you know what the Saudis are all about. Tell them to vote yes, when it comes to drilling in American territories and vote yes to building new nuclear plants. Think of it as helping us and the lives of our future generations.

Well, finally there is some good news to wake up to in regards to the war with Islamofascism, especially here at home. For years we all have been speaking about how CAIR needs to be confronted by our govt. How the two faced Saudis are making complete fools of us, by opening Mosques across the West that preach hatred towards us in our own backyards. What makes it even worse is that they are using our own money to open these houses of hate. We complain how Bush and co. pucker up and kiss Saudi ass. Well the tide just might be turning.

WASHINGTON --Rep. Sue Myrick wants America to "wake up" and stop allowing terrorism to proliferate -- and if that means revoking the passport of a former U.S. president or examining the preaching of prison chaplains, that's what she's prepared to do.
The Charlotte Republican on Friday released a list of 10 items she hopes will help peel back the layers on how radical elements of Islam might be infiltrating the military, school rooms and other elements of society. She also wants to stop the government from supporting terrorist organizations through financial investments and military sales.
Earlier this week, she called for President Jimmy Carter's passport to be revoked because he met with Hamas, a Palestinian group that the U.S. government says supports terrorism.
"His actions reward terrorists, lend support and provide legitimacy to their belief that violence will eventually get them what they want," Myrick said. Carter could not be reached on Friday.
The co-founder of the House anti-terrorism caucus has spent an increasing amount of time trying to tackle what she views as threats posed at home by extremists, an issue that fuels her commitment to deporting illegal immigrants.
One candidate who's trying to prevent her re-election this year, Democrat Harry Taylor of Charlotte, has questioned her priorities and said she has spent too little time fixing the health-care system, solving the energy crisis and helping her constituents' every-day lives.
Myrick said her views are in sync with her district's.
"When I talk to them at home about this stuff, they get it," she said of her terrorism concerns. "It's just that it is complicated. People would rather watch `American Idol.' "
Myrick acknowledged that her 10-point plan, "Wake Up America," might hit stumbling blocks in Washington. But she thinks it's time to start demanding answers. She said she was releasing her agenda now after carefully researching which issues had the potential for solutions.
"We put this together really to try to get a dialogue going," she said. "It's a beginning point."
Among her goals is to investigate Muslim military and prison chaplains who were endorsed by a man now in prison for funding terrorism, and examine the nonprofit status of an organization partially funded by Saudis.
That group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, says her assumptions are wrong.
"It sounds like your usual laundry list of talking points you can see on anti-Muslim hate sites on the Internet," said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group.
Though she's steadfast, Myrick has said in the past that she understands some folks might view her concerns that terrorists are infiltrating the United States as over the top, but that she bases her work on research and the advice of experts.
"This could all sound fanatical if people don't know about it," she said in an interview with the Observer a few months ago. "I'm not a radical person."
Political science professor Ted Arrington of UNC Charlotte said she should be applauded for tackling a tough issue. It's up to others, he said, to judge whether she's doing it in a way that plays on people's fears.
Myrick's 10-point plan
1. Investigate all military chaplains endorsed by Abdurahman Alamoudi, who was imprisoned for funding a terrorist organization.
2. Investigate all prison chaplains endorsed by Alamoudi.
3. Investigate the selection process of Arabic translators working for the Pentagon and FBI.

5. Make it an act of sedition or solicitation of treason to preach or publish materials that call for the deaths of Americans.
6. Audit sovereign wealth funds in the United States.
7. Cancel scholarship student visa program with Saudi Arabia until they reform their text books, which she claims preach hatred and violence against non-Muslims.
8. Restrict religious visas for imams who come from countries that don't allow reciprocal visits by non-Muslim clergy.
9. Cancel contracts to train Saudi police and security in U.S. counterterrorism tactics.
10. Block the sale of sensitive military munitions to Saudi Arabia.

Sharia, Sharia and MORE Sharia Part 2
This is the second part of what will unfortunately be a never ending series. It is not unfortunate in the sense that I will have to write these. I feel it is my duty. It is unfortunate because Islamofascists are never going to end their push to establish Sharia Law in the West. Their demands are getting and will get greater and greater. The more we give in, the more they will want. We already have calls to prayers being broadcast from Mosque loud speakers for all to hear, foot washing basins being built with tax payers money, etc. and now the push is getting greater.
Not all of the events are taking place here in the United States, but they are all connected as they represent the same goal. The goal of Islamic rule. Think about what goes on in the Middle East, is that what we really want here? Well that is what Islamofascists here want and make no mistake they are here. That is the problem with Muslim immigration. When you let in the "good" Muslims, you let in the ""bad" Muslims. Part of their plan is to "attack" the minds of our kids. To try and put a positive spin on Islam and get them used to slowly living under Islam rule.
1. Aussie Muslim Students Petition Universities For Sharia.
With absolutely no concern for anyone else. They seem to think the world owes them something, but then again we are just apes and pigs to them. Is there any coincidence that this selfish demand happened shortly after strong conservative leader John Howard was voted out of office? Howard who told Muslims that if they want Sharia they should leave the land of OZ. I think not.
Muslims want universities to fit prayer time

MUSLIM university students want lectures to be rescheduled to fit in with prayer timetables and separate male and female eating and recreational areas established on Australian campuses.
International Muslim students, predominantly from Saudi Arabia, have asked universities in Melbourne to change class times so they can attend congregational prayers. They also want a female-only area for Muslim students to eat and relax.
But at least one institution has rejected their demands, arguing that the university is secular and it does not want to set a precedent for requests granted in the name of religious beliefs.
La Trobe University International chief officer John Molony said several students had approached the Bundoora institution about rearranging class times to fit in with daily prayers.
Mr Molony said the university was attempting to "meet the needs" of an increasing number of Muslim international students, including doubling the size of the prayer room on campus.
La Trobe University International College director Martin Van Run said that although it was involved in discussions with the Muslim students who had made the requests, the university was not planning to change any timetables.
"That would seriously inconvenience other people at the college and it is not institutionally viable," he told The Australian. "We are a secular institution ... and we need to have a structured timetable."
Mr Van Run said that Saudi students were fully aware that the university was secular before coming to study there. "They know well in advance the class times," he said.
A spokesman for RMIT University would neither confirm nor deny reports that Muslim students had requested timetable changes.
One university source told The Australian that the requests by Muslim international students for timetable changes included a petition.
"Some of the students would prefer that lecture times were organised so it would be easy for them to attend prayers," he said. "But it wouldn't be a good precedent to set."
Islamic leaders yesterday backed the push by Muslim students to have their lectures arranged to accommodate prayer sessions, but said such a move would be essential only for congregational Friday prayers.
Female Muslim leader Aziza Abdel-Halim said yesterday it was a religious duty for those who followed Islam to preach with their fellow believers on Fridays.
But the former senior member of John Howard's Muslim reference board said there was nothing in Islam that indicated men and women be segregated when it came to educational activities.
"There's nothing in Islam that says there should be complete segregation, especially in educational institutions," said Sister Abdel-Halim.
She said afternoon prayers for Muslims - Zhohor, at 1.10pm, and Asr, at 4.50pm - could be performed until 10 minutes before the following daily prayer, so it was more appropriate to alter prayer times than lecture schedules.
"It's reasonable to ask for the lectures to be shifted around on Friday," Sister Abdel-Halim said. "But if it's going to cause havoc with the timetable, I don't think it's really feasible to ask for every single prayer to be catered for."

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Two issues of Muslim practice — whether the call to prayer should ring out across Harvard Yard and whether the university should grant women separate gym hours — have unleashed small waves of controversy over how Harvard practices tolerance.
.....The second controversy occurred after the adhan, or call to prayer, was once again broadcast across Harvard Yard at noon from the steps of the Widener Library for several days late last month. The broadcast was part of Islam Awareness Week, sponsored by the Muslim student club, the Harvard Islamic Society.
On March 13, an op-ed article by three graduate students denounced the practice, which has been going on for several years. They wrote that while pluralism was fine, the adhan espouses Muslim intolerance toward other faiths by stating that the Prophet Muhammad is God’s messenger. Calling it proselytizing, the op-ed article said, “The adhan, it seems, is the exception to Harvard’s unspoken rule of religious tolerance and respect.”
As to the call to prayer, Muslim students said the adhan was a basic statement of their creed and had nothing to do with denying other faiths. The debate focused mostly on whether Muslims were getting a right denied to people of other religions.
One student wrote in the comments section of The Crimson’s Web site that Harvard Yard was not a comparative religion class, while another said if students could romp there naked and urinate on the statue of John Harvard, surely forbearance toward other cultures was warranted.
Taha Abdul-Basser, the Muslim chaplain at Harvard, said both episodes were indicative of the growing number of Muslims in the United States.
“There are some people who are not just comfortable that Muslims, by virtue of the change of demographics, are going to become more and more visible,” he said.

Men have not been allowed to enter the Quadrangle Recreational Athletic Center during certain times since Jan. 28, after members of the Harvard Islamic Society and the Harvard Women's Center petitioned the university for a more comfortable environment for women.
Harvard Islamic Society's Islamic Knowledge Committee officer Ola Aljawhary, a junior, said the women-only hours are being tested on a trial basis. The special gym hours will be analyzed over Spring Break to determine if they will continue, she said.
Aljawhary said that she does not believe that the women-only gym hours discriminate against men.
"These hours are necessary because there is a segment of the Harvard female population that is not found in gyms not because they don't want to work out, but because for them working out in a co-ed gym is uncomfortable, awkward or problematic in some way," she said.
Though the policy was in part initiated by the school's Islamic group, Aljawhary said women-only hours are not a case of "minority rights trumping majority preference" and said women of different faiths have showed interest in the hours.
"We live together in one community, it only makes sense for everyone to compromise slightly in order for everyone to live happily," she said. "This matter is simple: Can't we just display basic decency and show tolerance and inclusion for people not a part of the mainstream majority?"
Harvard junior Nick Wells said he believes the women-only hours are inconvenient for the residents that live near the facility and discriminate against men.
"It is unfair to impose a stringent policy that inhibits [students] from using their own facility in order to further a useless policy that doesn't have any real effect," he said.

In a language foreign to many, the chanting was heard throughout the area Friday afternoon. With each word enunciated, the voice echoed off the buildings. It seemed to have originated from across campus.
People outside Richter Library turned their heads in confusion only to realize it was coming from the tower just above them. After acknowledging it, many continued what they were doing. Some, however, stopped and listened.
This March, in commemoration of Islamic Awareness Month, the Muslims Students of the University of Miami (MSUM) organized for the Islamic call to prayer to be broadcast each Friday afternoon from Richter Library's clock tower.
The call to prayer, or Adhan, is recited in Arabic and is meant to resonate throughout the area. "It serves as constant reminder of when we have to pray, because prayer itself is a reminder of our religion and how we practice it," said MSUM Vice-President Selima Jumarali.
According to the teachings of Islam, Muslims are to pray five times a day. Before each prayer, the call is usually performed live by an individual. In regions around the world with larger Muslim populations, it is not uncommon to hear it called throughout the day.
"[Here, it is] a prayer call across campus. Over there is it across the city," said Misbah Farid, who was one of the students who facilitated the broadcast.
It was chosen to be played on Friday afternoons, because "it revolves around the day of congregational prayer" said Jumarali. Like Saturday for Jews or Sunday for Christians, Friday "holds strong significance for Muslims."
Teresa de la Guardia is Director of International Student and Scholar Services at UM and was the administrator who made this possible. She was approached from the Muslim students about six years ago, who saw this expression as a means to spread understanding about their religion during Islamic Awareness Month. After receiving approval from the Division of Student Affairs, de la Guardia directed them to Gary Heath of the Richter Library.
An assistant support specialist at the library, Heath is familiar with the Carillon that produces the chiming of the Richter clock tower. Mounted in a circle on top of the Stacks tower, the speakers broad casted in every direction from the highest point of the library.
No other group has asked for audio to be played from the Richter tower in his 25 years working at the library, said Heath.
As he played the call, Heath recalled how his coworkers who would ask him what it was. While there were a variety of reactions, he said that he had never encountered anyone who was not accepting of it.
Outside in front of the library, students listened during the three- minute recording.
UM senior Kaleena Salgueiro said that although she could not hear the words in Arabic, the call was "pretty" and "very melodic." It reminded her of chanting in a monastery.
After listening to the call, senior Andreia Chaves recalled how she has seen the Muslim students hold their congregation on Fridays in the University Center.
Although there is a Muslim Students Center on campus in Building 21, it is too small to hold all the students who attend the Friday prayers.
"Muslims really don't have a place to practice on campus," Chaves said. "It's really good to have a campus-wide thing so that no matter where they are they can practice their religion."
Sophomore Razan Alif, who is Muslim, was also sitting outside and heard the prayer call. "You always hear church bells ringing, but you never feel the existence of the Muslim community on campus," she said. This was a medium through which they could do just that.
When asked whether they thought the Friday prayer call should be continued even after the month, many replied "why not?"
"If there's a Muslim population at UM and that's part of their beliefs, then I think they should," said Salgueiro. She also added that it is a good way to "educate" people on campus and bring awareness to the religion.
In the past six years it has been played, de la Guardia said there have been occasionally one or two complaints from people who felt it was disrupting.
In regards to continuing the call to prayer, she said that the students have never requested it. She explained that they want to be respectful to other people on campus.
If they were to request the continuation, de la Guardia thinks that the university would try their best to accommodate. At the same time, she said they would stress to other groups that they had the equal opportunities to do the same.
"We would have to look into other religious organizations on campus and make them aware that there's a possibility of expressing themselves in that way," she explained.
Religious expression on campus is never sponsored by the university, but rather facilitated by it.
Throughout the eight days of Hanukkah, a Menorah was placed on the Rock by ChabadUM. In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration this January, United Black Students organized a church service held in the lower lounge of the University Center. The Hindu Students Council held Garba-Raas last semester, which included dancing and music on the UC patio.
"Whether it's visual or audio, it is a religious message," said de la Guardia.
Sitting outside the library, UM law student Ashley Cetnar was aware of what she was hearing as the call was played
"It's good to make all types of religious things accessible on campus," she said.
Regardless of whether or not it does continue to be played, Jumarali expressed her gratitude toward the University. She believed that allowing this expression to be displayed "so openly and widely" is an "important step."
"It brings true variety to the university and open appreciation to diversity, especially in these times when people have misunderstandings of Muslims and who we are."

They wrote that while pluralism was fine, the adhan espouses Muslim intolerance toward other faiths by stating that the Prophet Muhammad is God’s messenger. Calling it proselytizing, the op-ed article said, “The adhan, it seems, is the exception to Harvard’s unspoken rule of religious tolerance and respect.”
As to the call to prayer, Muslim students said the adhan was a basic statement of their creed and had nothing to do with denying other faiths. The debate focused mostly on whether Muslims were getting a right denied to people of other religions.
One student wrote in the comments section of The Crimson’s Web site that Harvard Yard was not a comparative religion class, while another said if students could romp there naked and urinate on the statue of John Harvard, surely forbearance toward other cultures was warranted.
Taha Abdul-Basser, the Muslim chaplain at Harvard, said both episodes were indicative of the growing number of Muslims in the United States.
“There are some people who are not just comfortable that Muslims, by virtue of the change of demographics, are going to become more and more visible,” he said.

PrintEmail Article Tools Page 1 of 2 next > Harvard University has moved to make Muslim women more comfortable in the gym by instituting women-only access times six hours a week to accommodate religious customs that make it difficult for some students to work out in the presence of men.
Men have not been allowed to enter the Quadrangle Recreational Athletic Center during certain times since Jan. 28, after members of the Harvard Islamic Society and the Harvard Women's Center petitioned the university for a more comfortable environment for women.
Harvard Islamic Society's Islamic Knowledge Committee officer Ola Aljawhary, a junior, said the women-only hours are being tested on a trial basis. The special gym hours will be analyzed over Spring Break to determine if they will continue, she said.
Aljawhary said that she does not believe that the women-only gym hours discriminate against men.
"These hours are necessary because there is a segment of the Harvard female population that is not found in gyms not because they don't want to work out, but because for them working out in a co-ed gym is uncomfortable, awkward or problematic in some way," she said.
Though the policy was in part initiated by the school's Islamic group, Aljawhary said women-only hours are not a case of "minority rights trumping majority preference" and said women of different faiths have showed interest in the hours.
"We live together in one community, it only makes sense for everyone to compromise slightly in order for everyone to live happily," she said. "This matter is simple: Can't we just display basic decency and show tolerance and inclusion for people not a part of the mainstream majority?"
Harvard junior Nick Wells said he believes the women-only hours are inconvenient for the residents that live near the facility and discriminate against men.
"It is unfair to impose a stringent policy that inhibits [students] from using their own facility in order to further a useless policy that doesn't have any real effect," he said.

4.Islamic Call to Prayer Played From Clock Tower at Miami University

Library broadcast part of Islamic Awareness Month

In a language foreign to many, the chanting was heard throughout the area Friday afternoon. With each word enunciated, the voice echoed off the buildings. It seemed to have originated from across campus.
People outside Richter Library turned their heads in confusion only to realize it was coming from the tower just above them. After acknowledging it, many continued what they were doing. Some, however, stopped and listened.
This March, in commemoration of Islamic Awareness Month, the Muslims Students of the University of Miami (MSUM) organized for the Islamic call to prayer to be broadcast each Friday afternoon from Richter Library's clock tower.
The call to prayer, or Adhan, is recited in Arabic and is meant to resonate throughout the area. "It serves as constant reminder of when we have to pray, because prayer itself is a reminder of our religion and how we practice it," said MSUM Vice-President Selima Jumarali.
According to the teachings of Islam, Muslims are to pray five times a day. Before each prayer, the call is usually performed live by an individual. In regions around the world with larger Muslim populations, it is not uncommon to hear it called throughout the day.
"[Here, it is] a prayer call across campus. Over there is it across the city," said Misbah Farid, who was one of the students who facilitated the broadcast.
It was chosen to be played on Friday afternoons, because "it revolves around the day of congregational prayer" said Jumarali. Like Saturday for Jews or Sunday for Christians, Friday "holds strong significance for Muslims."
Teresa de la Guardia is Director of International Student and Scholar Services at UM and was the administrator who made this possible. She was approached from the Muslim students about six years ago, who saw this expression as a means to spread understanding about their religion during Islamic Awareness Month. After receiving approval from the Division of Student Affairs, de la Guardia directed them to Gary Heath of the Richter Library.
An assistant support specialist at the library, Heath is familiar with the Carillon that produces the chiming of the Richter clock tower. Mounted in a circle on top of the Stacks tower, the speakers broad casted in every direction from the highest point of the library.
No other group has asked for audio to be played from the Richter tower in his 25 years working at the library, said Heath.
As he played the call, Heath recalled how his coworkers who would ask him what it was. While there were a variety of reactions, he said that he had never encountered anyone who was not accepting of it.
Outside in front of the library, students listened during the three- minute recording.
UM senior Kaleena Salgueiro said that although she could not hear the words in Arabic, the call was "pretty" and "very melodic." It reminded her of chanting in a monastery.
After listening to the call, senior Andreia Chaves recalled how she has seen the Muslim students hold their congregation on Fridays in the University Center.
Although there is a Muslim Students Center on campus in Building 21, it is too small to hold all the students who attend the Friday prayers.
"Muslims really don't have a place to practice on campus," Chaves said. "It's really good to have a campus-wide thing so that no matter where they are they can practice their religion."
Sophomore Razan Alif, who is Muslim, was also sitting outside and heard the prayer call. "You always hear church bells ringing, but you never feel the existence of the Muslim community on campus," she said. This was a medium through which they could do just that.
When asked whether they thought the Friday prayer call should be continued even after the month, many replied "why not?"
"If there's a Muslim population at UM and that's part of their beliefs, then I think they should," said Salgueiro. She also added that it is a good way to "educate" people on campus and bring awareness to the religion.
In the past six years it has been played, de la Guardia said there have been occasionally one or two complaints from people who felt it was disrupting.
In regards to continuing the call to prayer, she said that the students have never requested it. She explained that they want to be respectful to other people on campus.
If they were to request the continuation, de la Guardia thinks that the university would try their best to accommodate. At the same time, she said they would stress to other groups that they had the equal opportunities to do the same.
"We would have to look into other religious organizations on campus and make them aware that there's a possibility of expressing themselves in that way," she explained.
Religious expression on campus is never sponsored by the university, but rather facilitated by it.
Throughout the eight days of Hanukkah, a Menorah was placed on the Rock by ChabadUM. In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration this January, United Black Students organized a church service held in the lower lounge of the University Center. The Hindu Students Council held Garba-Raas last semester, which included dancing and music on the UC patio.
"Whether it's visual or audio, it is a religious message," said de la Guardia.
Sitting outside the library, UM law student Ashley Cetnar was aware of what she was hearing as the call was played
"It's good to make all types of religious things accessible on campus," she said.
Regardless of whether or not it does continue to be played, Jumarali expressed her gratitude toward the University. She believed that allowing this expression to be displayed "so openly and widely" is an "important step."
"It brings true variety to the university and open appreciation to diversity, especially in these times when people have misunderstandings of Muslims and who we are."
